Lions confirm that Best is moving to a specialist role

Not often do you hear about a player getting less touches on first and second down – and you believe that to be good news. For Jahvid Best and his fantasy owners, this is great news. Best is most dangerous in space and will be a often used weapon in the passing attack that Detroit features. The Lions passed the ball a ton last season, and that trend is going to continue in 2012. Using a bigger back in between the tackles will mean less injuries for Best, and more explosive plays for fantasy owners.

Lions running back Jahvid Best has called himself a matchup nightmare, and the Lions’ coaches are talking up the possibility of using Best as a third-down back while making Mikel Leshoure and Kevin Smith a 1-2 punch as the featured backs in the offense.

What is also interesting here is the fact that Kevin Smith is mentioned prominently. Leshoure is out for two games with a suspension, and it appears that Smith will carry the yoke until he returns. It would not be the first time that a RB performed well and didn’t hand the job back to the incumbent…this is especially true for Leshoure who hasn’t earned anything yet (though his potential is very high.) Leshoure is still the RB to own between he and Smith – but this may change during training camp.

Target Kevin Smith with a late round flier.

Nice post. Hadn’t heard this blurb about Best and was thinking of him as a nice sleeper. I like Kevin Smith late with the upside he could be a productive every down back should Best or Leshoure go down.
